WHAT MAKES JAPANESE A5 WAGYU SPECIAL?
The term “Wagyu” literally translates to “Japanese cow” and refers to four specific breeds of cattle from Japan. These breeds are famed worldwide for producing beef with remarkable marbling, delivering a flavor and texture that’s truly unmatched. A5 is the highest grade awarded to Wagyu, denoting exceptional quality in both marbling and texture.
COOKING JAPANESE A5 WAGYU AT HOME: IT’S SIMPLER THAN YOU THINK
We get it—investing in a premium cut of meat can feel a little intimidating. The good news? Cooking Japanese A5 Wagyu is much easier than you might think. Its natural flavors and rich marbling do most of the work for you, ensuring that even a simple preparation results in an exquisite steak. Here’s how to cook it to perfection:
Steps:
- Season Simply: Generously season both sides of the steak with salt and pepper. Let it sit at room temperature for 10-15 minutes to allow the steak to settle.
- Prepare Your Pan: Heat a cast iron skillet until it’s very hot. Lightly grease the pan using a neutral oil with a high smoke point, like avocado oil, or rub it with the fatty edge of the Wagyu steak.
- Quick Sear: Place the steak in the pan and sear for 1 minute on each side
- Rest and Repeat: Remove the steak and let it rest for 2 minutes. Then, return it to the pan for another minute on each side to finish.
- Final Rest: Allow the steak to rest for another 2 minutes before slicing.
PRO TIP: EXPERIMENT WITH DONENESS
If you typically enjoy your steak cooked medium or more, consider trying your first Wagyu at medium-rare. The tender texture and intense flavor of Wagyu are unlike the steaks you’re used to. Don’t worry—if you’d like it cooked further, it’s easy to return it to the pan.
